When you have a family, it’s almost expected that you also have a few other things. Families are supposed to get a house, but they’re also supposed to get a family car – right?

Everyone always tells you that you need a good family car. There are countless articles explaining how to find the right one. But, did you ever stop to think that maybe you don’t need a family car? Can you get by without one, is it beneficial not to have one?

Honestly, there’s no right or wrong answer here, and it depends on you and your family. Here are a few questions to ask yourself to work out if you really need a family car or not:

Where do you live & how much travelling do you need to do?

Think about where you live, then consider how much travelling you need to do every day. Are you close to everywhere you need to be? Perhaps you live a short walk or bike journey away from work, and the local schools are also within walking distance. Or, you have public transport that’s easily accessible and simple for you to get on. The more inconvenient it is for you to travel, the more need there is for a family car. If your only way of getting to work or school is via a car, then your hands are pretty much tied!

Do you want to go on long family holidays?

Another reason to have a family car is that it lets you go on holidays as a family. Of course, you can always get a taxi or train to the airport and go on holiday that way. However, with a car, you can explore more of the UK whenever you want, going to the lovely coastal towns, the Lake District, and so on. If this is something that you’ve always dreamed of doing as a family, then buying a car is going to be worth it. 

Mobility

For most people, having a car is a necessity, from picking up the children from school to driving to the grocery store. Not everyone has easy access to public transport or has the ability to walk everywhere. Without a car, daily life becomes even more difficult especially if you are suffering with ongoing mobility problems. If you’re looking for a budget friendly family ride, this motability vehicle is the ideal choice. Having reduced mobility can often mean compromising on having a car, but with this option you will always have a reliable and stylish form of transportation.

Many families want to do this to afford the downpayment on a house, letting them move out of a flat and quit renting forever. Consider how much money you can save by not having a car and needing to pay for petrol, servicing, repairs, etc. If you remove all of these ongoing costs by not having a family car, you can reach your savings target a lot faster. 

It’s that last point that’s probably the most useful and relevant here. In reality, most families will benefit from having a family car at some point. However, it could be beneficial for you to not have a car for a certain amount of time, using this time to save money. Especially if it is possible for you to get around without a car and without any stress.
