Sadly and as expected, our Summer break has been a little less than Summery! Why is it that every year the second the children don’t have school? The sun practically disappears and we are left trying to entertain bored kids? Today I am going to share 10 things to do with the kids on a rainy day. This way you should be able to fill a miserable day. Or even just buy yourself a minute for a cup of tea when the little monsters just won’t quit.

You Don’t Need To Spend A Fortune!
It may be that you just need to replace a few glue sticks or paper in your craft box. If you don’t have one I highly suggest you grab yourself one together. I may even post about mine to give you inspiration and some tips on what to stock in there. Maybe a reshuffle through the toys will get the kids interested in a toy they haven’t played with for a while. Even if that means you use it to get rid of a few you don’t need.
There are lots of free or extremely cheap activities you can achieve at home. So do not worry that the weather is drizzly and horrible. These should help save your day!
Paper Plate Crafts – 10 Things To Do With The Kids Top Pick
I am a huge advocate of paper plates crafts! I am actually going to be featuring some soon as they are just so handy and the kids love them. There are just so many little crafts to choose from. Not to mention a packet of paper plates usually cost below £2 for like 30 so they are great value for money. I have featured lots of paper plate crafts before, a few above, such as these great masks and also this cute Christmas bunting. A great and inexpensive craft for the little hands in your house.
Movie Day
Get the day on backwards! I have to say this is a family favourite and a clear winner in our house. Start with a large breakfast and even go cooked if you can. Then grab a shower or bath and don’t forget to dunk the kids in too. Grab on some fresh PJs for everyone and climb in the sofa and stick a good film on. Have a lighter lunch and dinner as you’ve had a large breakfast and you’re set up for a lovely chilled day. You may even grab a moment here and there to get some chores done while the kids are quiet and busy. This can be coerced by the use of snacks. If their mouths are full they can’t argue, right? Right!
Build a Beach
Yes, you read that correctly and it actually more simple than you think my loves. Grab some blue material and this could be a sheet or a duvet cover. Basically any large blue piece of material. Then a more neutral or yellow sheet, large material etc for the sand. After you have set up your beach have the children draw fish, boats, whales and whatever their hearts desires in the sea. Simply cut around their drawings. They can add sand castle, buckets and spades to the sand and pretend to build sandcastles. Add a real beach ball and you can play a game of catch. Have sandwiches by the sea without getting sand in your lunch. Plus the kids will be loving their very own beach parties!
Teddies Bears Picnic
A simple but great idea and food for little ones still not at school yet if they’re home a lot. Set up some bears on a blanket and you and you’re little ones join them. Set their lunch out and whilst you are enjoying your lunch, or after. Share a book together and I would say use this time to really get your children to enjoy reading. Get them to join on as much as possible and they’ll love it even more. Perhaps they can even help make the lunch or help you set up the picnic? Either way, this is a complete winner and even if your child is too big for the teddies. They may still enjoy the story you choose to read and spending time with you.
Homemade Play Dough
The best thing about homemade playdough is that is 100% non-toxic. So if your little ones decide to try a bit they won’t get sick. Plus it so easy to make and you probably already have everything you need to make it in your cupboards. So, here is a quick recipe for homemade play-dough.
- 1 cup of flour (any flour will do)
- 1/4 of a cup of salt
- 1/2 a cup of warm water
- 4- 5 drops of food colouring
- Add the flour to a bowl and add the salt.
- Then add the drops to the water and stir.
- Slowly add the water to the dry mix and stir as you do.
- Once the flour has absorbed all the water knead the dough until it is firm and pliable. If it is still moist just add a little flour to dry it out.
10 Things To Do With The Kids Must Include Board Games
This may seem a little ancient but I can promise your kids would love an afternoon playing board games. They are such a great investment and so handy when it is tipping it down. Plus with so many great new games out in the market may be the kids need a few new ones on their Christmas list. What games did you love playing when you were younger? I loved Scrabble and spent many a day playing it with my lovely Nan. Rain, making that patting noise on the roof of the conservatory. Rainy day perfection! Also, be sure to check out your local charity shop for a few bargains.
Crafts Box
As mentioned above one of the best things you can have is a craft box. Fill it with card, toilet roll tubes, crayons, pencils, glue, stickers, material offcuts, pipe cleaners and any other craft item you can think of. Buy a plastic sheet for the floor and some aprons for the kids and you’re good to go. Let them have at it and clean up will be easier as you’ve covered everywhere. This has personally entertained my children for hours of their own choosing. They love getting crafty and making things so they explain it all to me or Dad. A great way to help grow their imagination too.
Bake
Why not bake? If you’re not a born baker then you can check out this simple Unicorn biscuit recipe I posted a while ago. Whether you are a lot who can help the kids whip a culinary delight. Even if you have to buy a box from the supermarket. Kids love to see and eat the results of their hard work. Don’t limit it to just baking though and why not get them to help make their own lunch? Making a fun activity out of another chore on the list.
Enjoy the Rain
Sometimes you need to put your wellies on, grab your brollies and your raincoat. Wrap up the kids and go for a good splash in some puddles. You only live once after all so why not dance in the rain for once. Not only that but after enough time indoors the kids become really restless and need to get out. As in they’re doing your head in and usually fighting at this point. This is a good way to enjoy the nasty weather for a change. Nice warm baths or showers once home and some sarnies. Some warm dinner and your little ones will be ready for a good night’s sleep.
Salt Dough – 10 Things To Do With The Kids Top Pick
A little different from play dough obviously. For a full recipe and directions you can check this gingerbread ornament recipe post I posted last Christmas. Salt Dough is amazing though. It gives you the opportunity to make whatever you want and the kids can get really creative just making their items. Then once they have been baked they still need to decorate whatever they made. Another great craft to enjoy and keep little monsters busy.
Sometimes having to keep children entertained 24/7 for 6 weeks is insanely hard. Especially if you don’t have anybody to watch your children for you and give you a break. That is also not to mention the families who can’t afford the holidays and expensive day trips. Now you have so many free or extremely cheap activities to keep your little ones busy and entertained.
